This past spring I was asked by one of my professors to participate in a summer research program called SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience). When choosing a topic I had a few thoughts that came to mind: What teaching approach do I feel most confident in implementing in a classroom? How can I deepen my understanding of that approach? What area do I feel the least confident in teaching and how can I build my confidence and better my understanding in that area? I feel very confident in differentiating instruction for my students, as well as using a guided approach to teaching. The area that I have had the least amount of experience in teaching is mathematics, therefore I wanted to explore this area. Additionally, math was an area that I struggled in when I was in elementary school. I understand how difficult it can be to grasp mathematical concepts and that for some students it takes various experiences, different methods, and time to feel confident about a concept.
A lot of strategic thinking and planning went into this guide and I hope that those who read and use this Math Workshop guide benefit from it as much as I have benefited from creating it.
The photo above is from Friday August 25, 2017 when I presented my research to the incoming freshmen at Shippensburg University. I received such great feedback from friends, family, and other professionals in the education field. Honestly, when I chatted with the freshmen I wasn't sure if they'd find my research interesting. To my surprise, I had continuous groups of students approaching me and engaging in genuinely interested conversations about my research. My favorite question that I was asked by a few of the freshman was: Why don't teachers use this approach in high school classrooms?
And you know what.....why not?
