IT IS OKAY FOR STUDENTS TO KNOW THEIR READING LEVEL. I REPEAT...IT IS OKAY FOR STUDENTS TO KNOW THEIR READING LEVEL. Did I make that clear? Below are a few things students SHOULD know about their reading level.
>Level Expectations
Students should be made aware of what is expected of them, even those Kindergartners starting at a level A. Educators should feel comfortable enough to orally and visually explain to their students what is expected of each of them at their reading level and what they need to accomplish in order to advance to the next level.
>Location of books equivalent to their reading level
The classroom teacher should overtime acquire a wide variety of books of various levels. Most students come into a classroom reading at many different levels, therefore it is beneficial for the students and the teacher to have many multi-level books readily available in the classroom. The teacher should have these books organized in a way that the children can easily find their level.
>They are in control of their own progress
When children have a full understanding of the different reading levels and what it takes to move forward to the next level, they will potentially assist in their own progression of their advancement. In other words, they'll develop a sense of control over their own progress. Practice makes perfect. Educators can work WITH their students to create goals.
>The challenge of advancing to the next level
As children get older they become aware of the student sitting next to them reading a level J, while they are still reading a level F. This could be frustrating and discouraging for the student reading at a lower level. We should make students aware of the challenges that each level holds and help them to understand that each new level contains its own trials that you must practice and master. With patience and practice they too will reach that higher level.
I'd love to hear your thoughts...
As an educator, aspiring educator, or parent do you think that it is beneficial for students to know their reading level? Why or why not?
