//Math Workshop Benefit: Opportunities for Students to Individually Practice Skills//

Independent practice is an essential part of Math Workshop. After learning a new concept during whole group, and then further exploring that concept in depth during small group, guided math instruction, students need the opportunity to practice the new skill or concept independently. Independent practice allows students to deepen their understanding of a concept through exploration and trial and error. We want provide opportunities for our students to learn on their own by giving them independent time to focus on the process of learning and not just the end goal. Math Workshop incorporates whole group, small group, independent, and collaborative practice, which allows for students to look at concepts being taught from different perspectives and explore those concepts in depth and at their own pace.

Why is Independent Practice Important?

1. Students are given the opportunity to learn how to learn

2. Students are able to focus on the process of learning

3. Students can work at their own pace

4. Students develop a sense of time management and independence

5. Students are given the time and resources to explore questions and misconceptions they may have, therefore deepening their understanding

6. It is rewarding for students when they independently make attempts to understand a concept and finally have that "ah ha" moment

7. Students develop an awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses

8. After giving students time for independent trial and error of a skill or concept, they will eventually develop the ability to self-critique

9. Students learn to use resources to answer questions, further understanding and expand on skills and concepts
